Public Art Installation Proposal
Starlight Park
A peaceful space to rejuvenate the mind while creating a safe and memorable experience.
The Story
Starlight Park is a public art installation designed to provide guests with a peaceful space to rejuvenate the mind while creating a safe and memorable experience.
The concept revolves around the idea of "A walk through the Stars," creating an immersive environment that blends natural landscaping with digital light art to evoke a sense of wonder and tranquility.
Development & Design
My collaborator, Xinyi Wang, and I developed ideas focused heavily on the user experience. We asked a series of guiding questions and built our design around the answers we discovered:
- What do guests get after the walk?
- What's the purpose of navigating through the star field?
- Is it an educational, emotional, spiritual, or passive experience?
Modeling & Patterns
The development process involved detailed modeling of the park's layout and the specific light patterns that would bring the "Star Field" to life. Light show pattern designs were created specifically to be viewed from the elevated seating area, creating a dynamic visual anchor for the park.
Refinement & Accessibility
Iterative design was crucial for this public installation. We identified that the original seating area lacked sufficient visibility in the low-light environment and posed accessibility challenges.
Modifications included adding lights to the perimeter of the steps for better visibility and integrating ramps to ensure the park was accessible to all guests.
The Experience
The final prototype brings all these elements together into a cohesive virtual environment. Guests enter through the archway and are immediately immersed in the star field, guided by the light patterns towards the central Grotto.
